ASSET Recommends... Reviewed sites to make connections across the curriculum

Explore this educational content aligned to the Arizona Academic Standards that compliments resources from Thirteen’s NATURE. They include engaging activities for learners from PBS Teachers and Thinkfinity along with other trusted sources. They model appropriate use of technology to address individual learning styles and needs. They provide a supplement to Thirteen’s PBS award-winning series, NATURE!

PBS Teachers:
Use these resources directly from the URL or create a free account and save your bookmarks and participate in discussions with educators worldwide. Set your view to customize and include your local PBS station and broadcast schedule.

Example 1: Writing and debating the environmental impact of legislation and industry on ecosystems around the world. PBS Series POV Borders – Environment is a lesson written for Grades 9-12 but adaptable for other grades. It incorporates science, social studies, and math.

Example 2: Add PBS Teachers Activity Packs to your class web page or blog. “Earth Day” from the Science & Technology collection reminds your students that every day is Earth Day if we take care of our planet, make wise decisions about legislation and solve local environmental problems.

Thinkfinity:
Use these resources directly from the URL, access by searching through IDEAL in the Learning Resource Manager, or create a free account at Thinkfinity.org.

Example 1: Connect NATURE with environmental literature through lesson plans from Read, Write, Think. Read excerpts from Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and work with your students on writing poetry inspired by NATURE.

Example 2: Connect NATURE to Economics and Social Studies with lessons from Econ EdLink. What happens when environmentalism is taken to extremes? Consider this example from Vail, Colorado.

Library of Congress:
The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps and manuscripts in its collections. Explore resources that connect NATURE to other areas of your curriculum.

Example 1: Connect NATURE to History and Geography. Study man-made and natural disasters, the origins of the American conservation movement, and view Landsat photographs, valued for aesthetics more than their contributions to geography. Use maps to trace the growth and unique features of the National Parks. Learn about nature writers and visual artists.

Example 2:  Teach the value of using primary sources.  Examining primary sources gives students a powerful sense of history and the complexity of the past. Helping students analyze primary sources can also guide them toward higher-order thinking and better critical thinking and analysis skills.
