| A
snapshot of Delta Blues: Skip James and Robert Johnson
What ultimately influences a musician's creations? Is it
the time in which he/she lives, his/her personal experiences,
the music of the time and previous times, or the image the
artist hopes to convey? This lesson explores these questions
by looking at the life and times of two early bluesmen:
Skip James and Robert Johnson. Students consider what influenced
both men, their unique musical contributions, their public
personae, and their legacies.

Hip
Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhythms
(PDF)
Hip-hop
is a cultural movement that exploded in the early 1970s
in the Bronx, New York. It draws upon the dance, poetry,
visual art, social and political legacy of African, African
American, Caribbean and Latino immigrant communities in
the United States. Hip-hop began as an independent, non-commercial
musical and cultural form of expression. Nobody thought
it would ever make money. Rather, it was about enjoyment—or
“rocking the party.”

| Lift
Every Voice and Sing
This lesson, one of a multi-part unit from ARTSEDGE, explores
the origins of "The Black National Anthem," which was originally
a poem by James Weldon Johnson entitled "Lift Every Voice
and Sing." By analyzing the poem's figurative language,
students understand how the poem conveys a sense of hope
and unity despite hardship. Students also learn how the
addition of music further enhances the messages of imagery
of the poem.
